A typical landfill methane gas capture well pumps methane gas to a power plant or to be “burned off” by flare stack located onsite. Identification of landfill gas emission hot spots are potentially a very time consuming process, and the use of a drone based screening tool could be an effective investigation strategy.
For this study, Firmatek used drones to capture a thermal scan of 3 gas wells to monitor and proactively assess increases in temp that may indicate potential internal combustion inside the landfill. The secondary objective is to track potential gas leaks across the landfill site.
A drone-based FLIR sensor was utilized to fly over landfill surfaces and capture thermal properties of the three wells. We deployed during active landfill, and will log after site is closed as part of ongoing maintenance protocol to detect and prevent underground fires, gas leaks, and unusual ground settling.
